Best FREE local classifieds sites to post ads in Australia – & why.

Free ads Australia

This post aims to start a definitive list of the Best FREE online local classifieds sites to post ads in Australia – and why.

Some you will know, others not. Whether you’re a buyer or seller, in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Canberra, Darwin,  & anywhere in-between,  I hope it helps you achieve online classifieds success. If you have other suggestions, please add in comments & let’s grow the list for everyone!

1. Gumtree.com.au

The ‘big daddy’ of classifieds in Australia, you can advertise anything & potentially reach huge numbers of eyeballs;  Gumtree is currently ranked number 11 in the top 500 Australian websites. So if you want to reach a ‘mass market’ consumer audience, advertise here. It’s well-designed & very easy to use, with every conceivable category including dating and friends, but not without its critics. Categories such as share accommodation, electronic & computer, and home and garden appear to get crowded in some locations, particularly Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane. Owned by Ebay.

2. Housenet.com.au

I’ve put for our Housenet Classifieds high on the list for a unique advantage we offer: our classifieds automatically reach other members in your suburb.

Although people can still search by location & category, when you create a FREE listing in the Housenet Classifieds, it will appear in the activity feed for users in your neighbourhood. See this deliberately CUTE example:

 Housenet

It’s a ‘hyper-local’ way of selling online, where  the neighbours have more chance of seeing it, even if they’re not searching for it!

TIP : The Housenet classifieds are especially good for real estate & property, flatmates, garage sales, pets & stuff you want to give away or sell to the neighbours.

3. Craiglist.com.au

This is the oldest & most famous – it even has its own Wikipedia entry. Originally from the U.S, it’s been in Australia now for some time. Has a nice basic, old-school look & feel and is popular with techies, geeks & travellers. Appears most popular in Sydney & Melbourne. Proudly independent, though eBay rumoured to own 25 per cent.

4. Quicksales.com.au

An excellent domestic competitor to Gumtree, with a very slick design and sizeable audience – currently ranked 645 on Alexa for top Australian sites. Owned by Carsales.com. A quick search indicates Quicksales are strongest in Sydney & NSW, especially for Books & Magazines, and in Queensland for Real Estate.

5. Cracker.com.au

An approachable, free-wheeling classifieds site. Most listing categories FREE except for jobs & some others.  They don’t do auctions. Owned by Fairfax Media. A quick search indicated Cracker is currently has greatest penetration in SA & Adelaide.

6. Locanto.com.au

Locanto Australia is part of a huge international group of classifieds. This site appears to be busy across multiple categories, but not as crowded as some others. Worth listing here. Appears to be strongest in QLD & Brisbane, as well as NSW.

7. Quokka.com.au

A great classifieds site, I really like it but it’s for Western Australians only. So if you’re in Perth or WA & need to reach people there, give Quokka a go! Basic listings are free, and they do auctions too.

8. TradingPost.com.au

In the print era before the rise of online, Trading Post was king. Still strong, with an Alexa rating of 621st  and probably the best general classifieds site for cars, boats, & auto. Jobs and most items under $500 are free to list, but otherwise fees start from $20 per ad. A quick search indicated that TradingPost.com.au is strongest in Melbourne & Victoria, with over 50,000 current listings.

9. Oddsw0p.com.au

This site is a cool new start up that deserves a look. Still in beta mode, but stunning design and taking a ‘local’ approach to classifieds that could be the future. Looks to be most popular in Inner Sydney so far.

10. Freeclassifieds-Australia.com.au

This site is appears to be most popular for ‘business services’.

So there you have it! As you can see, there’s no shortage of sites where you can advertise online for FREE.  But not all classifieds are created equal. Some are better for certain niches, others have huge audiences, but your listing competes with hundreds or thousands of similar listings in the same category for attention. Unless you pay, your listing can get lost.

So either do your research & choose your classifieds site carefully to connect with the the right audience, or if you’re in a hurry just advertise on multiple sites at once!

Cheers, Darren

PS: Please share & link to this post if it has helped you. Also, add your ideas for additions in the comments to improve the list – thanks.

Thanks for the inclusion of our site! We appreciate it. Would you mind updating it so it’s spelled as ‘oddswop’ (note it’s an o not an a). The other way will work anyway…
